A horrible infliction of government on the populace will no doubt continue after today's election in Venezuela. It is a human tragedy.

Updates here

Maduro has issued some 16 million "fatherland cards" that give food and shelter to holders and those holders are being offered more food and more welfare to vote for Maduro. They are being monitored to be sure they vote and vote for Maduro.

quote:

Near Petare, Caracas’ biggest slum, festive revolutionary music played as a few dozen voters stood in a long line to flash their so-called “fatherland cards” to socialist party volunteers.

A woman wearing a Sports Ministry jacket in the red, yellow and blue colors of Venezuela’s flag scanned each card with her phone —a form of verifying that cardholders had done their patriotic duty of voting, presumably for President Nicolas Maduro.

quote:

Many of the voters said they hoped their loyalty to the revolution amid an unprecedented economic crisis would be rewarded with a cash bonus, or even a new apartment.

Last week reports were that even parts of the military complex is starting to revolt.

Maduro calls his rule a "revolution" and certainly benefits from keeping people poor and on the dole. He has intimidated opposition with military and police powers while confiscating their wealth.

The results of the "election" are a foregone conclusion and one praised by leftist including the leader of all Catholics.

quote:

Pope Francis is praying that “beloved” Venezuela’s people and rulers will wisely choose peace and unity as the nation elects a new president.

Wisely choosing Maduro may mean some form of government impose peace but will in IMHO lead to a civil war sometime in the future.

Most of the world considers the elections illegitimate.

quote:

“Venezuela’s so-called elections today are not legitimate. The United States stands with democratic nations around the world in support of the Venezuelan people and their sovereign right to elect their representatives through free and fair elections,” she wrote.

Sunday’s election has drawn broad criticism since some of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s most-popular rivals were barred from running, and several more were forced into exile.

Echoing the views of Venezuela’s tattered opposition movement, the U.S., European Union and many Latin American countries have already said they won’t recognize the results.

quote:

“This is not a democratic act,” said Bertucci, a TV evangelist, after casting his ballot in the city of Valencia.

Let the world pray that the opponents of Maduro expel that horrible idiot from power through whatever means necessary. Let the world pray that the barriers and economic system that is killing people through starvation and lack of medical supplies is ended and removed from the country forever. Pray that those brave enough to stand up to the tyrant are successful.

Why, historically, are south american voters so averse to free markets?

North America was for the most part settled by Northern Europeans that had a mostly English influence and thought process on things like private property and work ethic.

South American countries that exist today were for the most part formed by Spaniards and Portuguese and thus have the culture of those countries. The culture differences are huge. The Spaniards felt a great need to send their wealth home and to Rome and to spread Catholicism. No one in North American felt any real need to rape the countries by taking the wealth and send it to England (thus the American revolution) and no one denomination of Christianity had enough power to strip wealth from the country.

My humble opinion.

Thankfully the Chileans made some strides in the past 30 years toward capitalism that has brought peace and wealth to their people.

Sort of.

Its not that the Spaniards and Portugese are incapable of forming good governments, Portugal isn't bad at all and Spain, by European standards, was doing very well until they came out on the really wrong end of the real estate market crash a while back. Fortunately for Spain they rest easy in the knowledge that Germany and France will make sure that they stay stuck in an economic recession.

The big difference is that the United States and Canada attracted settlers. South America attracted people who wanted to loot everything that wasn't nailed down. Then, once they'd stolen all the gold they could find, they grudgingly turned the entire continent to latifundia. Think of it as the South, but no one wanted to settle there, just import slaves and force the native to work.

Argentina was largely settled by actual colonists and didn't turn out as bad, other then the whole being fascist for decades and then going with a military junta.

As much as it pains me to say so... the English and French were just as guilty of this as the Spanish were. Even with a robust tourist economy and wonderful climate most of the Caribbean countries are as corrupt and screwed up as you will find in South America and the English and French are the ones who set up those colonies.

Australia is, climate and native species wise, a hell hole on the other hand. Yet its a vibrant first world country. Why? Well it might have been settled by the scum of the British Empire but they were there to settle down and build communities. Not rape the native cultures.
