which more or less cornered slave states into facing the humanity of their slaves.

Was that by accident or by design? Was it to get something that could be adopted, or did it have the design you attribute to it from the get-go?

Texas and Florida are now larger than New York.

Naming states is inaccurate. It's more like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and Houston. Combine the voting age populations of just those cities and you see the point.

They've been pacing cities with minorities for decades, for this reason.

Hard to say, but it was inevitable either way. Virginia wanted representation based on population, of course, and they couldn’t help themselves from wanting to count their slave population and demand that they be represented in Congress. Anti-abolitionists played themselves.

New York and California don't automatically get to decide how the rest of the Nation lives.

On the other side of the coin, less economically impactful states can enact policy that favors them and disadvantages more economically impactful states.

Well if the major cities want to dominate the heartland, the EC keeps them in check. But then, it's still based on population, so the heartland can't dominate the big cities. Balance!
