Yes, because the farmer added rooms as the family grew. Most started out as one bedroom one bath and that would have been on a rice farm with government subsidizing via buying most of the rice to give away overseas.

Interesting is a friend who was born into a timber baron family. They did have a summer home on a lake due no central AC. The home was 2 BR 1 bath then 3 BR 1 bath, then 4 BR, 3 bath over several decades to become 4000 sq ft. No one wanted the land when they first obtained it due no highways or even country roads to get to it.
