long time lurker, but had to finally post because there’s so much misinformation and grandstanding surrounding the OBBB and spending in general.

First, this bill only covers tax policy and mandatory spending. This means that discretionary spending is not covered - that has to go through appropriations which is a 60 vote threshold. So for everyone saying they want to see DOGE cuts and budget reductions, the OBBB can’t include that if we want a 50 vote threshold.

People like Elon, Rand Paul, and now a lot of low IQ turncoats on this board keep saying this bill raises deficits and it doesn’t do enough to address our spending problem. My simple question to Elon and others - what else should we cut then? I have yet to hear an actual plan from these so-called deficit hawks. Unless your plan includes massive reforms to Social Security and Medicare, then you are nothing but a grandstander. 50% of government spending comes from SS, Medicare, and Medicaid. The OBBB includes some Medicaid reform but does not touch the other two. I would love to have a conversation about SS and Medicare but Trump ran on not touching those programs, and to be frank, Congress and the American people are not ready for that conversation. So please, STFU about deficit spending unless you put the two biggest entitlement programs on the chopping block.

I also love the Ron Johnson talking point of bringing spending back down to pre-COVID levels. Ah yes Ron, please tell me how you’re going to bring Social Security payments back down to 2019 levels when we have way more people on the program due to an aging population. Such a low IQ “solution”.

Last point, the bill only “raises the deficit” because it extends the tax cuts. Not only is that misleading, but it’s non-negotiable- the tax cuts have to be extended. If you put that part aside, this bill cuts a lot of spending (Medicaid work requirements) which reduces the deficit. If your response is “not enough”, then once again, put SS and Medicare on the chopping block or STFU.

People on here just read headlines. The majority are too lazy to actually read the news

I’ve asked many times and they haven’t said. They also don’t realize Congress would have to pass legislation to get rid of those cuts and it cannot be done in a budget. But orange man bad or something …

On a serious note, this is a good point. The government/congress has a weird way of thinking that all money is theirs. If they provide a tax cut, they automatically say it's going to increase the deficit. In actuality, it was never there money in the first place, so they shouldn't count it that way.

The problem is that those grandstanders, deficit hawks, etc. portray their "opponents" as just that.

I doubt there is a single person that thinks this is a perfect bill or doesn't want there to be more substantial reductions in spending, but you're not going to get that with this bill.
