That is BS and has been proven to be BS. This logic that those people would not sell us oil unless we have a Navy fleet off their coast is BS. Whoever is telling you that is twisted. That is the ole logic of when the US government was working with oil companies to get control of ME oil--ie when we overthrew the democratically elected government in Iran.

SemperFi, my best friend is a retired E9 from the Corp. Trust me I get my share of shite from him, I usually told him if he needed help on the ASVAB retest to give me a call. A great American, I ran into him during Desert Storm in the sandbox, for some odd reason he was really in love with the A-10, he said the Hawg was his savior. I can't for the life of me figure out why.

If we didn't have a force in the region, Iran would be freaking with our ships left and right. Piracy would be alot more. If we didn't have a presence in Japan and SK, NK would be trying to conquer SK and maybe more and commiting even more horrible acts. China would be invading taiwan. Our presence there checks that and keeps the peace.

Once again all that was done to stop the spread of communism (one of the greatest evils in world history). So IDGAF.
Back to you topic of cutting the defense spending. Are there ways to cut spending? Yes Should we? Yes but we shouldn't just stick our heads in the sand say hey you leave us alone we will leave you around. But like I said yesterday we don't need to be all John McCain and send troops everywhere.

Just when did keeping the peace there become a constitutional mandate?
But just to follow your points. China took Hong Kong back without instance. Taiwan was not an independent country before and will probably reconcile with China soon and I really don't think China cares anymore. SK would destroy NK in a matter of weeks. Not even the Chinese will stand with NK now.
I personally do not wish to be taxed to keep the peace in Asia.
