Ill comment, but I never served.

I think our military should be the terrible monster that stays locked in a box until diplomacy fails.

When that box is unlocked they should be told what the goal is and then step out of the way and let them do it in the most violent, efficient way that results in the least loss of American lives.

Complete overreaction. Use a grenade to kill a cricket. Make the response so horrible that other countries will always come to the table and work out something diplomatically.

That’s how I remember getting taught in basic training as well as my deployment to Afghanistan in 2013 with the 3rd ID

If our soldiers get shot at, they should then have the full authority to completely destroy the shooter and everyone supporting the shooter. PERIOD!!!

I remember an embed reporter with NBC made waves in Fallujah about one of our guys shooting an injured Iraqi that had just a short time earlier been firing on our guys from inside a Mosque. Our guys sent a shoulder launched Rocket into the Mosque and then entered the building. They found the room that had been hit and there was an injured Iraqi Insurgent in the corner so they shot him. This seemed completely normal to me but the Reporter saw this as a bad thing and the unfortunate soldier was investigated for doing his Damn Job.

if he was injured and not fighting back, then he is no longer a threat and should not be killed. not sure why you would think otherwise.

I was an Army JAG and trained and briefed on ROE extensively. The biggest issue we had in Iraq was our ROE were derived from our Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). Our political leaders agreed to the hostile act/hostile intent standard in the SOFA so we were locked into that. Obviously, the easiest standard to conduct warfighting by is the minimum required by the Geneva Conventions, however, it's a problem when your enemy combatants don't wear uniforms and slip in and out of civilian appearing status. There isn't an easy answer, you can't kill every military age male in a warzone without major blowback politically and diplomatically. However, you can definitely not agree to the hostile act/hostile intent standard.

When I watched the video back then, I remember the room being very dark and the US Soldier saw movement and shot. The whole incident seemed very logical to me. Dark Smokey Room and bad guy moving.

The guys moving into the room were likely on edge after being shot at continuously and were there to eliminate the threat.

I was completely confused as to why the soldier was investigated.

I will agree that we don't want our guys shooting innocent civilians but this guy was moments ago shooting at them.

The embedded reporter created a shite storm for that soldier and I don't think he deserved that.

this is the reality of the ROE issue. it's never as simple as a five second soundbite.

My Military experience was vastly different and did not require the split second decision making that the guys kicking doors had to make.

I had to identify targets based on if command decisions were coming from the target. If they were then we had a valid target and could proceed to order strikes.
