Where have you been the last 100 years? It’s a common practice for a governor to appoint a relative of the deceased to serve out the remainder of the latter’s term. It’s happened four times in Louisiana: Huey Long, Gillis Long, Hale Boggs, and Luke Letlow. Edwin Edwards appointed his wife to the US Senate after Allen Ellender’s death.
