History.

They abhor having to govern or lead. They don't like the work. They don't like the criticism. They don't want their constituents to have a record to judge them by (because their constituents usually will hold them to account for it).

They prefer to be in the minority. They can obstruct and fundraise. They get to go on the weekly talks shows and bitch and whine without consequence. They get to be the controlled opposition and get invited to the DC social events.

Trump has forced them into the light. He has forced them into the position where they have to make difficult choices and they fricking hate it.
