For two months, Republican lawmakers in both chambers of the GOP-controlled Legislature have been working to muscle through a controversial package of bills to downsize New Orleans’ courts.
Now, the lead author of the consolidation plan in the Senate has agreed to put off a final vote on a major piece of the package — a bill to slash civil, criminal, juvenile and municipal court judgeships in the city — for more negotiation.
“Members, this bill needs some work. I’m still in discussions with some people,” Sen. Jay Morris, R-West-Monroe, told the Senate on Tuesday before a vote to divert Senate Bill 217 to a conference committee.
Morris declined to elaborate on why he’d rejected a series of House amendments in favor of a huddle by a panel of lawmakers. The bill had been poised for a final vote before reaching Gov. Jeff Landry, who has indicated he’ll sign it.
