Everything is so circular in politics right now. Just inferences piled on inferences bringing us back to the viewpoint of the person asking the questions.

"Mr. President, what do you say to those people who are concerned about your authoritarian tendencies"

"What, I don't think that's something Americans are concerned about"

"Mr. President, there was an article just yesterday..."

"From who?"

"Well I wrote it, Mr. President"

"Obviously I disagree with whatever it says"

"Don't you think it's a problem that we're having to talk about whether you're authoritarian or not, though?"

Like Upgrayyed said, these people create the hostility and then complaint about it. They also ask unmerited questions and then talk about how unprecedented it is that we're asking questions.
