weaponizing the 'dislike button'

I watch YouTube for history lectures. My favorite is Simon Whistler. Most of the time I don't even notice the like/dislike count but when I do it's usually 90% like ratio.

Why does the count matter?

It changes what you see on the suggested videos, which is where a majority of content is found.

I think he means why do we need to see the number.

It serves as a micro review. Like the star rating on Yelp or the rotten tomatoe score.

In this case it's used as a metric for engagement. Higher engagement means more ad revenue and so on. It's just one of the factors that affect this.

So, if your video has a lot of 'dislikes' then people don't even bother to watch to see if they like it?

Are people downvoting your cat videos again?

It wont show up in people's suggested videos. Likes, dislikes, comments and shares all factor in to what videos are suggested based on what you're watching.

So, the downvoting from the OP article is actually an attempt at censorship? Preventing you from seeing a video that the perps don't want you to see?

Well, YouTube has algorithms that determine how visible certain content is. They don’t publicly release that info. It’s a private company. Now in theory dislikes could affect the visibility of content which is why there is suspicion that “bots” like and dislike political content to influence viewership. People exploit everything. Amazon reviews are also subject to this kind of thing usually to drum up support for products.

Of course most republicans don’t think hackers influence the dissemination of information. So yeah, no threat of censorship in their eyes.

I think it happens but it’s hard to say exactly how much. Facebook and YouTube and others are very protective of that stuff. They’re basically data aggregation companies.
