Never take what they say after an event as having any merit. Take what they said before. If you're a power hungry, soulless narcissist, and your brethren just stirred up a hornet's nest, guess who's arse is on the chopping block? That side's politicians. Of course they want to tone it down, because they don't also want to be assassinated.
