The current executive branch has me confused as a goat on astroturf.

You should blame Congress and the USSC for slowly expanding the powers of the executive branch through the years.

The President shouldn't have hardly any direct power outside of war time

As Ben Shapiro put it in his podcast yesterday afternoon, the Legislative branch has forfeited most of their power to the Executive and have merely become a rubber stamp for the President's agenda.

In some ways, yes. Executive Orders were never meant to create policy. That's Congress's job.

Everyone write letters to your Congressmen/women every week to let them know how We the People really feel! Demand answers from them! Mail their “canned answer” letters back to them and let them know that you want real words and actions and want to hear them standing up for your state on the floor of Congress every single day!
