Guy Hunt was the first Republican Gov of Alabama in my life. My Grandmother was so excited she cried. She hated Democrats

And Hunt only was elected because of the turmoil in the Democratic Party. After losing the Democratic Primary for Governor, then Lt. Governor Bill Baxley successfully sued the Democratic Party for not forbidding then AG Charles Graddick for openly soliciting Republican crossover voters in the Democratic primary even though Alabama then had open primaries.
The Democratic Party ended up rejecting the vote of the people and picked Baxley in a sleazy back-room deal*. It was a hot stinking mess and Alabama voters turned to the little known Republican Hunt in the general election because they were fed up with such Yellow Dog politic’n.
*That sounds vaguely familiar doesn’t it?
