Walter football
27 New Orleans Saints: Dee Ford, DE/OLB, Auburn
The Saints could use another edge rusher for Rob Ryan's defense. An edge rusher like Ford would be a nice weapon on the other side from Cam Jordan. Ford also could play defensive end in the sub package in Ryan's defense. New Orleans likes defenders with versatility - see Kenny Vaccaro - and Ford would fit that description.

Sources have told WalterFootball.com that Ford is grading out as a late second-rounder, but teams think that someone will reach for him late in the first round. In 2013, Ford had 29 tackles with 14.5 tackles for a loss, 10.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He finished the season playing his best football. Ford recorded six sacks with 34 tackles and a forced fumble in 2012. He missed the majority of the 2011 season with a back injury.

After Aaron Donald, Ford was the most impressive defensive prospect at the Senior Bowl. He had a great week and continued his tremendous play in the game. All week, Ford used his great get-off and quickness to burn edge blockers in one-on-ones. He has the agility to drop his hips and juke tackles to the inside. Ford also has enough upper-body strength to help him break the grip of tackles' hands before using his speed to close in an instant.

The 6-foot-2, 243-pounder projects best as an edge rusher in a 3-4 defense. Ford played defensive end in college, but he doesn't have the size to do that in the NFL. In a 4-3 defense, Ford would have to play as a linebacker who rushes off the edge in passing situations, similar to Von Miller in Denver.

Pick change; previously Scott Crichton, DE

58 New Orleans Saints: JuWaun James, OT, Tennessee
The Saints could lose right tackle Zach Strief in free agency, and New Orleans has done a masterful job of landing offensive line talent in the mid- to late rounds.

James played well in 2013 for Tennessee, but he didn't have his best game against Florida. However, James played better in other games, including versus South Carolina. He got some double-team help when going against Jadeveon Clowney, but kept Clowney from recording a sack. James could be a nice sleeper pick. The 6-foot-6, 311-pounder moves well for his size and has the strength to open holes in the ground game.

This season wasn't the only year that James was rock solid on Tennessee's offensive line. He started all 49 games of his collegiate career at right tackle. The Volunteers allowed just 18 sacks (1.5 per game) in 2012, and James had a strong season protecting Tyler Bray.

Pick change; previously Christian Jones, ILB

91 New Orleans Saints: Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
The Saints go with the best player available and land a young receiver. Considering the ages of Marques Colston (31 in June), Lance Moore (31 in August) and Robert Meachem (30 in September), it makes sense that New Orleans would get some young talent to go with Kenny Stills.

The 6-foot, 189-pound Abbrederis is a gritty receiver with the speed to stretch the field and some toughness. He caught 73 passes for 1,051 yards with seven touchdowns in 2013. Abbrederis torched Bradley Roby and Ohio State for 10 receptions, 207 yards and a touchdown.

Despite terrible quarterback play in 2012, Abbrederis totaled 49 catches for 837 yards and five touchdowns. He consistently produced big plays for the Badgers over 2011-2012. In 2011, even though Abbrederis had fewer receptions than No. 1 receiver Nick Toon, Abbrederis topped Toon in yardage. Abbrederis caught 55 passes for 933 yards and eight touchdowns. The sophomore exploited a lot of soft coverage and produced some big plays for quarterback Russell Wilson. Abbrederis also returned punts and averaged 16 yards per return. He is a good blocker as well.

Pick change; previously Cam Fleming, OT

122 New Orleans Saints: DeAndre Coleman, DT, California
The Saints grab a fourth defensive lineman to go with Cam Jordan, John Jenkins and Akiem Hicks. Coleman would be a nice fit for the Saints with his ability to play 3-4 defensive end and 4-3 tackle. Coleman recorded 40 tackles with nine tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks in 2013. California had a rough 2012 season, but he still played solid football. The junior totaled 48 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks and one pass breakup. He recorded 19 tackles with six tackles for a loss and two sacks in 2011. At the Senior Bowl, Coleman had a quality week of practice. He has size and power with some quickness. Coleman (6-5, 314) could fit as a 3-4 defensive end, nose tackle or a 4-3 defensive tackle in the NFL.

draft daddy

27. New Orleans Saints - DE/OLB Kony Ealy, Missouri

If Rex Ryan can make the 6' 5" - 290 Pound Quinton Coples work at OLB in his 3-4 scheme, his brother Rob can do likewise with the 6' 5" - 275 Pound Ealy.

NFP

27 – New Orleans – Jeremiah Attaochu – DE/OLB – Georgia Tech
( scouting report)

fftoolbox

27. NO: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
New Orleans has been improving at linebacker of late, but it is still not the strength of the team. Shazier is an NFL-ready player who is leaving Ohio State early.

58. (2.26) NO: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas*
New Orleans' offense is outstanding, but the interior of the line could use some improvement.

fftoolbox user composite

27. NO: Dee Ford, DE , Auburn
Could also go with Ryan Shazier, LB , Ohio State

-----------------------
I think most outside of Saints followers have forgotten about Victor Butler. He doesn't have a long starting record but do think they brought him in last year to be a vital component in pass rushing. His prior record was similar to Juneyah before last year- limited, but highly productive when in.

SB Nation.............

19. TRADE New Orleans Saints (via Miami Dolphins) - Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA

*The Saints trade their first-, third- and fourth-round picks to the Dolphins for pick No. 19

Two trades in as many picks. The Saints need a pass rusher for their 3-4 defense. Anthony Barr is rough around the edges, but his physical talent is undeniable. If he falls into the late teens, someone will jump up to take him before he gets to the Cardinals, Packers or Eagles.

Take it out on the opposing QB's Jr.

Who doesn't remember watching this kid in camp and pre season and seeing him being the fastest guy to the QB only to watch him rot on the bench?

Why does almost every mock draft show them picking a LB? Between Galette, Harylson and Butler, id say theyll pass on a 1st rounder. Also Hawthorne and Lofton are pretty solid in the middle.

With how deep this draft is, if we trade our 3rd and 4th round picks to move up to pick an olb I will choke a newborn kitten.

Victor Butler is a FA in 2015. We need to start looking for more help.

I think Loomis is good at that kind of stuff.

I would expect to draft a guard as well, hoping that he can play well and allow us to release one of ours next offseason and free up some $$.

As much as everyone talks about the contract Cam Jordan is going to command, we forget about Hicks. He is a beast and will get paid as well. I can also see us getting another 5 tech in the draft for this reason.

Rarely do these rookies make an immediate impact. I think they look at contracts coming the following year when drafting (at least I would), so the 2nd year guys can replace some of the big $$

If I'm ML, here's how I would draft:

6 picks:

WR
G (plays center this year)
DE
FS (KV plays SS)
CB
ILB (Hawthorne cut next year)

I'd go get a RT in FA

AARAAGARARRAGRARGRHARHARGARGHHh

Yeah that was my reaction to that. I was talking with my buddy about it the other day.

Williams was to strict on guys having to do it his way to get playing time. Spags was just a fricking idiot.

I'm glad Ryan just lets the best players play and builds around them. I knew Ryan could be good for us, but I had no idea he'd be that good.

And yeah everyone needs to chill on the Saints needing pass rushers. We have 2 elite guys in Jordan and Galette and then another guy with tons of potential in Butler.

So how about instead of adding to strength and taking snaps away from great guys, we try to shore up our weaknesses.

Put me down for these things on defense, whether through the draft or free agency:

Legit #2 corner
Turnover machine safety
Elite speed coverage linebacker

With Bush back in the fold, we actually have starters at every position except CB2(though there are potentials), but I feel safety and ILB could use an upgrade.

I'd like to get a corner in FA and the other 2 in the draft, unless we somehow make enough room for Byrd.

I agree with this except for the need to move the center over to guard, and drafting a DE this year.

I think we need to move on from Bunkley and his big contract(for a rotational player) so I think NT/DT/big DE(300lbs.+) is more of a need. We can focus on DE next year because Jordan will still be cheap.

I keep hearing this but center is also a very important position. If a guy can play it just draft someone else to be a guard.

In other words, not every guard can play center, but every center can play guard.

As for RT, I think if Strief doesn't come back we roll with Harris/Jones.

We gotta dream I guess, huh?

I actually like Ryan Clark on the one year plan.

Haha or Pryor look like the only surefire safeties. I'd be happy with either but expect them both gone. An ideal tandem with Clark would be Jimmie Ward NIU. He might be good enough to supplant Clark from the start. But if he's not, you have veteran leadership until he is.

Definitely wouldn't mind it as we could use a vet back there to help Vaccaro and Bush(and would be way cheaper).

Really looking at our whole secondary, they're all very young. No vets to lean on for experience.

I wouldn't mind adding a big situational olb to the mix to help stop the run. I feel like this can happen for pretty cheap in fa or later in draft.

Walter Camp's new mock:

New Orleans Saints: Kony Ealy, DE/OLB, Missouri
Considering that New Orleans has to deal with Matt Ryan and Cam Newton twice per year, the team could stand to bolster its pass rush. The Saints can't count on Victor Butler, who is coming off a torn ACL. Butler will be a free agent following the 2014 season anyway.

Love Ealy. First time I've seen him pegged for us.

Saints- 4th in sacks

Conclusion: Not only do these people know nothing about our team, they are too stupid to even look at something simple like stats.

I agree. Not even the top 3 of areas we need to upgrade, IMO. But if a talent like Ealy is still there when we pick, it would be hard to pass him up. Can never have enough highly talented pass rushers in the NFL, ask Seattle!

I'm definitely not saying don' take him if the Saints feel he's the BPA, but just pointing out the assumption for us taking him is dead wrong.

Kirwan Mock
Dee Ford, DE, Auburn: Rob Ryan can work with lots of different types of players. Ford has pass rush skills and is athletic enough to drop into coverage.

Prisco Mock
Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia: Right tackle Zach Strief is an unrestricted free agent. If the Saints can't get him re-signed, this makes sense. If Strief re-signs, they could draft a receiver or pass rusher.

Brugler Mock
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State: With the Saints are missing a big-play receiver on the outside who could potentially be a No. 1 threat for Drew Brees. Benjamin needs refinement in several areas, but you can't coach his size/speed combination that is a mismatch for many NFL defenders.

Rang Mock
Dee Ford, DE, Auburn: Few know better than Saints' defensive coordinator Rob Ryan the value of pass rushers and with a spectacular week at the Senior Bowl, Ford's stock is skyrocketing. While lacking elite size at 6-foot-2, 243 pounds, Ford is explosive edge rusher equally capable out of the two-point and three-point stance, allowing Ryan to use the hybrid defender in multiple ways.

Brooks Mock
KONY EALY DE MISSOURI
Rob Ryan needs more pass rushers in the stable to wreak havoc on opponents with his blitz-happy schemes. Ealy is raw, but his combination of speed and athleticism could make him a force as an edge player in an attack scheme.

Now they are just making shite up completely. Weren't we the team that blitzed the least in the whole league? I know for a fact it was said we sent less than 4 rushers the most(not that it was very often).

Gotta love these "experts".

New Orleans - Dee Ford, LB, Auburn
Switching to a 3-4 requires speed and athleticism off the edge, which Ford brings in bunches. Hes explosive off the edge and is just what the Saints hope they can find on draft day.
LINK

Jordan Matthews WR Vanderbilt
In the last CMD, we went heavy on OLineman awaiting free agency machinations. In the interim, the Saints find a very solid wideout (and a local product they're no doubt very familiar with) sitting in front of them at pick #27. Matthews represents the youth movement needing a place in the Saints' receiving corps (Stills and Toon are "youngsters in the mix"). Marcus Colston and Lance Moore are pushing past 30+ years of age. Moore and Meachem (heading towards 30 himself) may not even remain with New Orleans. Joe Morgan is coming off injury --another reason Matthews could be tapped here. CB Bradley Roby could be just as likely at this spot, but we're keeping the Saints on the attack offensively. The deep draft offers the Saints more opportunities for CB, S, and other areas, but they have to keep adding new weapons like Matthews on offense in order to ring up the scoreboard like usual.
