can anyone explain to me what factors dictate what color plastics to use, beyond the obvious "use a brighter color in dirty water" ??

Darker natural colors in low light levels, brighter/shinier/less natural colors in high light levels
ETA a lot of times you just have to play around depending on your body of water, species, and what they're feeding on; however, water quality, light penetration, and cloud cover are always biggest indicators of where to start, IMHO
