You said you live in a neighborhood so you need to think about where a .22 round is going to end up if it skips off of something. If there’s nothing down range, that’s fine, but using a pellet gun will likely be safer, and it’s plenty adequate to kill a coon with a head shot.

Yes, that’s about 10x the power of .177 cal air rifles these “coon killers” in this thread are swearing by.

No one is swearing by them. Just saying they absolutely penetrate coon/opossum skulls because they do easily.

22 short has about twice the FPE of a decent 177 pellet gun.

I still use a pellet gun at my place to keep from waking up the family late at night.

I use .22lr sub sonic Aguila in a single barrel rifle. All you hear is a click. Kills groundhogs and coons.

Welp, I bought some .22 bullets today. Since I have seen 4 coons at a time on the porch, I decided to do a little experiment and bought two types of bullets:

- CCI Quiet -22 LR

and

- CCI CB Short

They both have the same muzzle velocity. However, the shorts have 29 grain lead whereas the Quiet LR have 40 grain lead.

The only thing left is to kill this pile of coons. I will report back as to the effectiveness and quietness of each.

Sounds like a Benjamin pump without a can

That hasn’t been my experience, especially from the front with the animal facing me.

22 short has about twice the FPE of a decent 177 pellet gun.

A decent break action .177 air rifle has about 10 ft-lbf of muzzle energy, with some of the most powerful approaching the 15 ft-lbf range.

On the other hand, a good 22 Short out of a 16” rifle has about 110 ft-lbf of muzzle energy, or about 10 times that of a decent .177 break action air rifle.

Why be stupid and say a 22 short has about twice the energy as a decent .177 break action air rifle when you can easily verify it is about 10 times as powerful with the internet at your finger tips?

100%. I use the kids 22 AR with a can on it all the time for it.

I did use the internet... you are intentionally using the absolutely highest rated 22 short stats and the lowest .177 pellet stats from the weakest air rifles.

Average 22 short makes half what you are claiming and average .177 makes twice what you are claiming.

All I wanted to say is that it's ridiculous to say coons/opossum skulls aren't penetrated by pellet guns. I find it hard to believe you have shot either of those animals from the front with even a low grade air gun and it just bounced off their head lol

As a kid even my shitty Crossman that you had to pump up numerous times would drop a coon and that gun was garbage compared to what's used today.

You either didn’t, or you are bad at math.

I told you a good 22 short vs a decent .177 cal break action air rifle, and I stand by my comments as true and accurate.

quote:

Average 22 short makes half what you are claiming and average .177 makes twice what you are claiming.

If you walk into academy and grab a medium power 22 short hunting load, it’s going to be 29 grains at 1100fps out of a 16” barrel. That’s about 75 ft-lbf of muzzle energy.

If you take your puny .177 cal break action air rifle that says on the box “up to 1000fps!” or even “up to 1200fps”, realize that that is a lie. I know because I have a chronograph and I’ve tested them. Expect a pellet in the 8 grain range to come out at least 200 to 300fps slower than what the box claims “up to”. Then do the simple formula for muzzle energy and you’ll see a “good” break action .177 does about 10 to 12 to mayyyybe 14 ft-lbf of energy on a good cold dense air day.

Do the math and then re-check your comment that a 22 short only has twice the energy of a .177 break action air rifle to see if it holds water.

quote:

All I wanted to say is that it's ridiculous to say coons/opossum skulls aren't penetrated by pellet guns.

Now you’re creating a straw man argument. I said my experience shooting possums point blank in the head demonstrated to me that a .177 break action air rifle wasn’t suited for that task. I never said “pellet guns”. A good large caliber (.25 and .30 cal) PCP air rifle is on the same level as 22 short.

As a kid even my shitty Crossman that you had to pump up numerous times

Well that sucks. I had a high powered German built .177 break action air rifle as a kid, so I have a pretty good idea about what they can reliably do.
