I’ve back tracked a few python threads for some information and you had your nose in all of them so I know you’re an expert. Check this GunBroker ad.

LINK

The current price point is decent but I’m hoping if I wait it out, it’ll get relisted at a cheaper price. What do I need to look for in these for the best price? It’s not going to be a safe queen. I believe guns are made for shooting and that’s what I want one for. But I don’t want it to look like it’s been buried either like that other one I posted.

Turn rings?
Chipped finishes?
Chipped grips?
After market parts?

Chrome is not a factory finish!

I think the seller is mistaking nickel finish for chrome.

The gun looks correct for a used factory nickel Python with clouding in the finish. Everything on this one looks factory original with some wear.

If you are wanting a shooter that you can have adventures with and not worry too much about the finish and grips, then that would be a good choice.

Interesting. Maybe that’s why no one has bid on it yet. If it doesn’t sell in this auction, what would be a fair offer for it?

Picture 5 I want to verify that is discoloration and not a chunk missing from the crown

Send the seller a message and ask if the gun was chrome plated and let’s go from there. I think it is original nickel finish due to the pony stamp and front sight pins, but it doesn’t hurt to check with the seller.

According to weagle, chrome isn’t an original finish. It was only available in nickel and royal blue. I want to say that the later models were available in a satin stainless and a bright stainless. Weagle can confirm that.

In the description, he mentions that the finish is chipped. Along with a chip in the cylinder.

quote:

BLUEING CONDITION: n/a, chrome, good, (2) small chips at the muzzle, and (1) very small one on the cylinder, tarnish on some areas of the chrome

I’ll ask about it and the actual finish though.

I've been looking for another python, and that's a pretty good price.

Factory finishes for the Python:

Royal Blue
Nickel
Electroless Nickel (Royal Coltguard)
Stainless (brushed / satin)
Bright Stainless (polished)

Electroless nickel has a satin / matte nickel appearance and looks like brushed stainless.

The chipped finish showing dark / blue underneath makes me now think this gun could be fugazzi.

Got a response.

quote:

It looks like a chip. I have not tried to pry at it to see if it is loose. I believe it is nickel as colt (I don’t think) used chrome on their snake guns.

He didn’t clarify if the chip is in the finish or barrel though. I’m trying to get that info though.

A chipped nickel finsh will show copper or bare steel underneath.

cool facts. thanks for that.

got word this morning that the chip is in fact in the finish. not the actual barrel. so that leaves the question, if it doesn't sell, what would a good respectable offer be? my budget is $1500 and i was thinking of offering that for the "out the door" price + shipping.

You can try that and see what happens. Just be aware of the possible shortcomings.

Can you wait and stretch your budget any? $2k will open up better candidates.

Well, this one looks better but the description says it’s pitting behind the grips. Plus the grips don’t appear to be factory.

Those are factory grips that someone modified. That said they look comfortable.

The gun also has a modified front sight (could be replaced), drilled and tapped holes in the topstrap, and a replacement rear sight that isn’t correct for that vintage gun (but correct for Colt).

If you want a shooter Python that one isn’t a bad choice based on what I am seeing

what does this mean? it's an aftermarket site? or it's the wrong year?
