Looking for some tips on this. Any good public access points? I have a jeep... so it doesn't have to be a nice paved road

Did this back in hs. Caught a ton of those red eye bass. Unfortunately, I was a young buck and went with a friends dad. No idea how we get there.

Find a bridge on a public road that crosses it.

Smoked them yesterday. Fished from 7am until about 11am. Anything over 10 inches is a good eating fish. Very clean white meat and a 10 fish limit. The river fishes well pretty much all year except when all the tiki tubing trash is on the water. Tiki tubing ended on labor day and yesterday we picked up two 30 gallon trash bags of cans and 7 tubes. If youre going to fish the tiki tubing stretch of river, bring wading boots just in case.

As far as I know there is no public access outside of French town BREC park but it's a tough wade in that area. I have heard of people putting a kayak/canoe in the water at the hwy 37 bridge and floating down to the French Town park but it's a long arse way and if you screw around too long you can end up paddling in the dark. Also the parking lot at french town in 6/10ths of a mile from the water. The trick is finding someone with access north of the Magnolia bridge.

Another thing you can do is access the comite from blackwater park and start walking up river. It's a pretty good fishery if you don't mind a long walk up river

A tunnel or jet foot will get you up river as far as you want.

If you manage to get access fish the slow moving water and deep holes. Cast under every tree and behind every stump. Keep your eyes open, yesterday the big bass were holding right on the shallow edge of the drop offs and on long sand flats. Stick and move. If you don't pick up a fish quick, keep moving. Throw the smallest white buzz bait or spinner you can get your hands on. Fly fishing seems to work a little better on the upper Amite if you can cast well into deep cover. 3wt is king here. Sinking spiders, red eye leach, olive or black or white buggers, small white poppers and cricket poppers.

Another thing to keep an eyes out for is fresh water drum and gar fish. If you can get them to eat they put up a big fight.

One last thing. There are some deep holes, especially on the outer bends. These holes are known killers. It can go from 10 inches to 10 feet with near vertical drop offs. DO NOT put your feet down if you fall in one. Pick up your feet and swim, you do not want to get tangled up in the snags that are in those deep holes. If you can't swim, stay home.

I don't know how far north you're talking about but I fish where the east and west prongs come together and we tear them up on mini spinner baits (Strike King Mini-King/Booyah Mini Shad) chartreuse with blood spots is my favorite color. Get some white and chartreuse grub trailers too. Wade up stream and reel your bait down stream. Oh and make sure you have a good pair of river shoes.
