I plan on purchasing a new GPS in the near future. My boat currently has an old lowrance from 1999 that for the most part got me back to the camp and kept me out of the mud. After seeing the detail of some of the newer models- it is time to open up the wallet. I am looking for any recommendations or advice in general. A few details: I don't care about sonar/fish finding nearly as much as reliable GPS and depth finder. I fish out of Delacroix and just want something basic that will be compatible with the "geaux card". (looks like Lowrance is the favorite here)

Cabela's shows a sale on the Lowrance elite ti 7's for $499.00

This would be right around what I am willing to spend.

What other spenders am I missing? installation, card, transducer?

Even better:

Lowrance Elite TI 7 w/ Downscan - $420

Dick's Sporting Goods

ETA: Not looking like its available to ship. Definitely worth a call at that price.

Would a transducer need to be purchased separately? I am not up to speed on all the requirements, but I have seen several units that say +transducer in the description. The Elite 7 TI doesn't mention anything about it.

Some units come with a transducer and some come with just the head unit. The ones with the transducer will be about $100 more for the basic transducer and go up from there for the side scan and so on

Most will tell you if it comes with a transducer and maps.
The one listed above you comes with a transducer (with/downscan). Read the fine print to be sure. Westmarine may also have some cyber deals right now. If i would have had marks for Garmin that's the brand i would have bought.

Get the new TI2 you can get it from tackle warehouse today with the new active imaging transducer for 599. It is worth the 100 dollar up grade from the first generation. If you ever want to add another the TI2 can network with another TI2. The first generation does not have the capability.

If you dont need sonar capability get the Navionics app and a sea sucker mount. Use an I pad. Its about $50 a year and always up to date. The I Navix app is cheaper but I find its more suitable for offshore while the Navionics is better for the marsh

Any recommendations on where to get this installed in the BR/P'ville area?
Ball park price?

I considered doing it myself since my boat is already configured (with an old model), but I am not super confident I would be able to.

This is a good idea I might try on my duck rig, how would you waterproof the ipad?

Edit: I take that back, I see the waterproof cases are compatible with the mount

Lowrance to Lowrance (or any corresponding unit), use existing power cable to machine and pull the new ducer cable.
easy peasy

You can always bring it to cabelas or a boat dealer but like the previous poster said it is not difficult to do. The only hard part is feeling confident enough to drill holes in you boat.

4200 fixes most mistakes, square and a second set of hands are invaluable.

Lowrance elite ti 7's

I have 2 of these on my boat that are sync'd together; I wished I had installed 9" but no problems with them. The touchscreens make them easy to navigate too.
