I have a mare that foundered before I got her. She is a good baby sitter for the kids so I didn't think much of it. Either the previous owner lied about the feed or the spring grasses have triggered it but she is unable to walk on front right and front left is pretty tender. No abscess and very tender on her sole. Im thinking laminitis and was wondering if there are any other treatments besides a padded boot.

Update at bottom

I'd get your farrier to come out and look at it. Obviously they aren't a vet but they are very knowledgeable about the feet and would be cheaper than the vet.

He may have some other options.

Im having my farrier pull her shoe and make sure its not causing the pain. Will try and make a trip to tractor supply and see if they have a padded boot

I paid $500 for the horse and I'm trying to avoid a vet bill for X-rays. Will be cheaper to bute her and haul her to a slaughter pen but hate to do that

You have any hoof testers? Do you know exactly where she's painful? Pretty certain there's no abscess?

If it really is laminitis there are a number of different treatments/medications/etc.. but a lot of them aren't easy to do unless a horse is in a stall the whole time. Even then you sometimes can't save them.

Rads wont really cost you that much. If she's (significantly) rotated then you have a whole other world of problems. Bute isn't a long term solution since it could lead to GI issues in the long term. We just put bar shoes on a brood mare that is having similar issues as you described. Call my wife and find out what she charges for rads and the farm call. Shes pretty damn good with laminitis cases (and I aint saying that just because I'm married to her!)

The sole of the hoof was where the pain was in the beginning. This morning it seemed to be the entire hoof. Didn't have a lot of time to examine it.

Pulse isn't real strong, no heat or swelling. I soaked in epsom salt for 3 days and haven't noticed any oozing.

I could stall her up but not much point. She barely walks anywhere right now.

Imm gonna see what my ferrier says and start calling vets.

Update. Pulled the horse off of feed except for half a scoop of oats morning and evening. She improved to the point of her limp being barely noticeable as of last Friday. On Saturday she was back not putting any weight on it.

Had a vet come out today and do XRays. She has maybe a centimeter of sole left between her coffin bone. After some deliberation we've decided on Saturday we'll put her down. I hate to do it but I think it's the right things.

There are some other options like meds for blood flow, pain management, and a "clog" on her foot to help with sole growth. I feel it may just delay the inevitable.
