If y'all are wanting to go the Interstate route, Costco has any size Interstate deep cell for $70.

I have found Optima Blue tops to not be worth the cost.
man i keep hearing people say this and I wonder if they just chose not to pay the price for them and just poo poo them because.

I have never seen a problem with the Blue Tops in boats and their spiral core cells are more shock resistant than plate cells and more surface area = more power.
Every Blue top i've seen in boats go 5 year or more without any noticeable loss in power whatsoever.

I have a group 31 Optima as my starting battery in my Bass Cat.... its brand new so I really don't have a review but so far I love it. Had a group 27 Optima in my last boat and it was still going strong at 7 years old when I sold the boat. so I have no idea what Optima haters are talking about. Solid as a rock as far as I'm concerned.

What alot of people dont realize is that what causes premature battery failure is how rough it is on the flat cells trailering the boat and driving it in harsh conditions. That will break the cells at the bottom plate and cause complete battery failure. The spiral cores in the Optimas are not prone to this.

Ohh and,

Lithium is the best there is.

A little side note:

What kind of maintenance should I be doing to the battery that starts the boat? I assume this is the cranking battery?

Get a spray bottle with a little baking soda and water and spray down the top of the battery periodically. This will keep the acid at bay. May want to pop a cap off every once in a while to see if the water levels are high enough. If not put distilled water only in it.
