Huge fear. Used to drive on Big Lake west of Wasilla. We would go bar hopping among the islands but you never really knew if there were soft spots or not. They had street signs up on the frozen lake and lanes cleared though.

It happens so often that most vehicle tow companies in these areas have special fixtures they use to remove vehicles from the frozen over lake. Its like a giant ladder they drop through the hole that acts as a ramp on which they drag the vehicle back up through the hole allowing them to keep the weight of a tow truck well away from the hole.
