sprayer recommendation

Looking at a UTV sprayer for the bed of my Can Am. I'll be using the thing a few times a year to spray around my house and my deer property. This is mostly woods, ditches, and roads at the deer property. No big open pastures or anything like that. I've got a Defender HD9. I don't know much about sprayers other than everything I've read says go boomless. Is this a good option?
LINK
They've also got the 25 gallon, but I've read a few reviews where people regretted not going with the 45 gallon.

You won’t regret having a 40-45gal tank, that gets you several acres per fill with most herbicides. Our Ranger 1000 handles the weight fine.
I bought all the components separately.
40gal tank on Amazon
4.5 gpm fimco pump from tractor supply
Pump
3/8 nylon tubing, a suction strainer, and valley industries left and right sprayers
Sprayer nozzles
Very happy with the performance and the higher gpm pump is awesome, the pieces were cheaper for a similarly spec’d built one.

Man, this is an excellent post and I’m super grateful. At full risk of completely sharing my uter ignorance…. What sort of battery is recommended to run this operation? I don’t want to drop $200 on one if a $50 one would suffice….

The cigarette lighter plug on my sxs runs it fine, and I need to wire a dedicated plug for it, but I’ve also ran it off a small lawnmower cranking battery in a pinch. Really just depends on how long of a day you have planned, the pump pulls about 10 amps so any deep cycle that can deliver that will work.

Nice. Thanks for putting all that together man. Do you just mount the nozzle to your tailgate? Or do you have two? I’ve read really good things about those Black Rain nozzles. Seems I could just get one of those and mount it to the tailgate.
Do you have a wand on yours? I suppose I’d need some manifold or something to add that.

I redneck engineered a mount for them with some shelf brackets, but the black rain nozzle would have saved some fooling with it. You can use the regular 3/8” nylon barb fittings to plumb it up however you want, if you put a tee and ball valves that will allow you to make a manifold and run a wand. The pumps shut off at the set pressure and will good hose clamps I’ve yet to see it even drip leak. I don’t use a wand just because I’m broadcasting plots or spraying trails 99% of the time and they’re kind of a hassle, but it would be nothing to add one.

Sweet. Thanks. This all seems pretty doable. Do those fimco pumps come with a harness for the 12v plug? I have a 12v plug on my dash and it would be easier than alligator clipping to my battery. Would like to put a switch on the wire.

I can’t recall the brand but it’s usually hanging on the shelf in tractor supply next to the pump and most feed stores carry them, pre-wired harness with a cigarette plug, switch, and a fuse holder. I did have to replace it once when the cigarette plug rattled loose, wasn’t making a good connection, and burned up its internal glass fuse. It’s a good idea to run it through a dedicated jack that’s more solid but not essential.

Thanks a ton for all of your info and help. I’ve pretty much dismissed building my own sprayer for years but with your posts, it seems like something I could put together in an hour and save $400+. Love the OB.

Go bigger than you’d think with the tank. It’s nice to be able to finish the job and not have to add water and poison to your tank half way thru, that was me this past weekend. I have the black rain and a 2.4 GPM pump. With that set up I can spray about 15’ wide and stay moving. If I was to do it again I’d go with a larger pump and bigger tank to move faster.

DT - only thing I'm still confused about is the pickup hose going into that 40gal tank. Did you just drill a 3/8" hole and put a 3/8" grommet in it? Doesn't look like the tank has a hole.

In short, yeah, I just drilled a hole. I didn’t put a grommet, haven’t found that it splashes too bad. Don’t get me wrong plumbing everything up is still something of a project and may send you back to the store a time or two, but yes I’m still in it for several hundred less than a prebuilt rig and the whole thing took me about two hours. I’ll take pics of it this weekend and try to put together all the parts I needed, but in general as long as you get barbed fittings that fit the hose you got and some hose clamps, it’ll be easy to figure out.

I just ordered everything. I wound up going with the 25gal tank just because doing math, I couldn’t think of a situation where I’d need the 40. Got the black rain nozzle, manifold, 50’ of hose, and a handheld gun too. I will post photos of my build for future reference for anybody else looking to do the same.
I’m in everything for ~$500 and it would have been $900+ to buy one pre-built.

10-4, I think you’ll be happy with it, only other thing I’ll point out is you’ll need a suction strainer to go in the tank, a barbed 90 to go down from the pump inlet, and a bag of not PoS hose clamps. The pumps come with a random assortment of quick connect fittings, but they’re off the shelf too and seem to be universal.

Crazy how expensive those things have become. I bought that same 45 gallon Fimco sprayer 4-5 years ago and it was half that price.

I’d recommend going at least 4gpm for the pump if you’re using a boomless nozzle. If you look at the chart for the nozzle I’m pretty sure it’s going to suggest higher pressures than even the 4gpm can give you. Low pressures means bigger droplets and less effectiveness. Not the end of the world but something to be aware of.

Got everything in yesterday and assembled. Here are some assembly photos:
Materials. Pictured: 25 gallon tank, wiring harness with switch, Valley Industries handgun, 50' of 3/8" tubing for the handgun, 10' of 3/8" tubing for pump intake and return, Fimco 4.5gpm pump, suction strainer, Fimco manifold kit with a gauge, Black Rain nozzle, and Fimco clamps for the handgun.
Pump, sprayer clips, and manifold mounted. I wanted to mount the pump longways, but it wouldn't fit in the gap on top of the tank. The pump didn't come with any screws. Luckily I had some that worked.
Drilled a hole and placed the grommet here for the pickup:
I didn't have another grommet, so I just drilled a hole here for the return and siliconed around it:
Black Rain nozzle mounted. I reversed the claim so the screw was on the inside of my tailgate. Seems to hold it better for CanAm's design. Super impressed with the distance this nozzle covers. Not sure why anyone would need a boom for the same application.
Fully assembled:
Only thing I need to figure out is an effective method of hose management for the handgun. I bought 50' of hose because I will use it around my house for spraying Jomax etc. instead of having to lug around my backpack sprayer. Hopefully these photos help anybody looking to do the same thing. Doing it on my own (thanks to DrunkenTigah) saved me $500.
