quote:The problem there is it wouldn't be full tang (one piece construction) which can lead to a significantly weaker, and hence not as reliable, knife.
Having the additional empty handle that can hold matches, iodine pills, ect, is only a bonus if it does not comprimise the other functions and the container is water tight.

I'm dropping 10 bucks on that harborfreight knife. The reviews actually look pretty good.

I think you may be talking about that they started making another version that is made with a different steel and less expensive.
Apparently, the recon tantos were made out of Carbon V but are now made out of AUS-8A.

In most cases this is true but a knife could be constructed from a single piece of round or square stock with the blade processed down and the handle drilled out. I dont think I have ever seen this but it could be done.

Nice knives..
IF you want the original survival knife "Rambo" the guy who made the real knife go to Lile Knives...they are really exppensive but apparently are some of the best. Mr. Lile the guy who handmade all the knives dies some years ago and now his son took over. Very nice knives...I actually lucked up and got one from his dad.

There is no knife that will cut wood & hold an edge.

Is this bad boy still made? Seemed pretty kick-arse back in the day. I used to lust after it behind the glass of the local knife and archery store.

those "grappling hooks" mostly look like a hazard to your wrist.
Certainly not the normal thumb stop seen on the top of blades these days.

Also, a Mora would be right at home up there - I bet you see several. You can get 3 they're just about throwaways.

tell us what you'll be doing and what you envision to be the typical use for this knife.....are you talking about remote, back country living where you are making your own shelters or will you be basically backpacking roads and trails with a tent, etc?.......
I'll be going on a 400 mile trail. We will encounter towns along the way, but other than that it will be straight wilderness and we plan on sleeping in our tent every night.

This is what I'm going to end up going with. Everyone that has one raves about it, and the price just isn't beatable.

WTF are you going to be in a whittling contest? Man you better get you a real knife if you have to depend on it. That knife is for peeling peaches or maybe just maybe an apple.

What are you talking about?
I'm going to be using my knife for basic survival. I don't need an 8" knife. I just need something reliable that will stay sharp and help me get a fire going. I wont be using it to slay animals, but more along the lines of cutting rope, filleting fish, etc.

I don't know much about those knives but they obviously aren't going to be used to split wood. That is a very light duty survival knife.

I don't plan on splitting much wood. Since I'm not great with a knife, I want something that is easy to handle, reliable, and convenient.
My buddy I'm going with has a 6" blade that will be used if we need to split wood.

That knife is basically going to be used for food preparation and a few various light EDC tasks. Just so you know what you're buying. Most of the other knifes in this thread are camping/survival blades that are made for durability and longevity doing serious outdoor tasks.
