I grew up just a few miles from him. My dad kept his boat at Mr. Phil's house. This would have been late 70s early 80s I guess. I was at their house many, many times as a kid.
My dad's story: He was running slat traps on the river and Mr. Phil motored up to him with a shotgun on his lap. He said he had been watching my dad and he knew my dad never ran anyone else's lines or traps and if my dad wanted to leave our boat at his house he would shoot anyone that tried to mess with it. So the boat stayed at their house when we were running traps.
They were friends from then on. I specifically remember a conversation between my dad and him where Mr. Phil explained the type of cypress lumber he wanted for his duck calls. He showed my dad what he was looking for.
Mr. Phil got very private in his personal life as the years went on. When my parents would see them at the local store, Ms. Kay would go in and Mr. Phil would sit in the car. I guess he didn't want to be bothered by people but he would always talk to my dad. He was a good man and if you stood near him too long he would start preaching to you.
Weird thing is I don't really know the boys. I'm right in the middle of their ages but I guess they all went to Pinecrest Elementary and Jr. High and I was at Woodlawn Elementary & Jr. High.
