Thanks for all the help. To clear things up, I’ve been to Venice multiple times but It was always in a offshore boat when we were running in to refuel from the tuna grounds. I’m from south Alabama and have been in rough conditions before and know what to watch out for.

By no means will I be at the ramp with it soup thick fog and high tail it down the river. If we go we will have all the safety equipment (sat phone, Epirb) to do it and probably leave after daylight each day.

Currently I haven’t been able to get in touch with fish and wildlife due to holiday hours but will retry later in the week. There has been some very solid advice given in this thread which I thank everyone for.

I understand the risks and am not even going to drive to Venice unless conditions are favorable.

Also my boat does have higher sides then your typical mud rig, 24”. Hopefully if I go I’ll have a buddy with a bay boat with us or be able to link up with some buddies with a camp down that way so I could follow them down.

My crazy self ran an old 1965 riveted 16' vee hull with a 25 hp tiller loaded with camping gear, canoe and enough gas, water and coolers for a week long trip....carried my then 6 and 8 year old sons downriver with me too. I did it several times, just picked my days. That was 20 years ago.

I run a 24' Seaark now and have had it feel small plenty in that river. I had a buddy sink a 22' boat last Winter in the river, I can't even imagine how terrifying that would have been.

Lifejackets on, VHF radio, Flare Gun accessible and knowing how that river behaves on different winds can save a lot of pucker factor once you leave the jump.

I'd recommend getting a Sea Tow membership and insure your rig just in case. Better to plan and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I'm not from the area but have been making camping trips down to PAL with my dad for 25 years. I've found myself in some terrible situations down there.
