I bought a new garage door and had it installed. I painted the exterior of the new garage door brown to match my other garage door. The paint seeped through the crack where the panels come together and now the panel’s edges are painted on the top and bottom. The panels are sticking together when I open and close the garage door and I hear a loud popping sound. It is annoying.

I stripped the paint off the edges where the panels meet for one entire strip. I put blue tape on the upper and lower inner edges and repainted. Pulled the tape off and now I have white lines visible on the exterior. This will not work.

Any suggestions on how to keep paint from sticking to each other.

Let the paint cure first.

I’m putting two coats of paint on. How long should I wait before I put the second layer on?

The very first time I painted it and then waited about 2 hours and put a second coat on. Then the doors were not installed until 3 weeks later and they still were sticking.

Are you using latex paint?

let the paint cure well and then spray a little silicone on the area that is sticking. you should have a can of silicone around anyway to use on the garage door spring.

If using latex it takes a loooong time before you can let two painted surfaces touch without "sticking". Like months. And even then if the pressure and time is great enough then I wonder if it would ever become resistant to sticking.

OP maybe you can try applying some sort of a release agent between the contact points. I'd say silicone spray but don't do that because if you ever want to paint again you might find the overspray will prevent paint from adhering. Try cornstarch

Sherwin Williams makes a latex paint j just for this situation. It dries quickly and dries hard. I used it to paint my back door and frame and had no paint sticking. I painted in the morning and left the door ajar all day. Before I closed the door I coated both surfaces where they meet with talcum powder. The next morning, no sticking.

Oil based for doors. Latex seems to always stick.
