Took this looking down the channel toward Taku Inlet here in Juneau. Wind is blowing snow off the mountains making it hazy.

Nice pictures, Roger. I have been thinking about heading to Alaska this summer, and these pictures have made it appear to be a must.

Any recommendations for good places to hike and just explore? Also, would like to bring the kayak along.

Depends on where you go. Alaska is the most diverse state in the union and every area is much different from the others. Give me some idea on where you would like to go and I can shoot you some recommendations.

Thanks, the 1st one is a Wilson's Snipe. On the Spoonbill - that was the closest one has ever let me get. If you ever get the chance take your camera to the Viera Wetlands. It's on the Atlantic coast of Florida just south of NASA. The birds seem more used to people there and there are a lot of photographers doing their thing. Cool place.

Tomorrow I'll spend some time chasing Snowy Owls and other winter birds in Wisconsin. If I get anything good I will post it.

I'm seeing now how much shorter the legs are & the white stripe on the head. I'm weak when it comes to IDing medium to small shore birds, but I enjoy learning. I need to upgrade my scope, which would help alot.
Good luck on your trip, & look forward to seeing more pictures.

I facking hate ID'ing sandpipers and similar shore birds. Gulls too. Argh.

After 3 hours of driving the snowy fields of central Wisconsin I had given up on the Snowy Owls and then came across two of them while driving back to the interstate. Funny how that works. There are a lot more Snowy Owls around than usual this winter. Usually that means that their normal food source (lemmings in the tundra) is scarce and unfortunately a LOT of these owls will not survive because they are not used to hunting this far south.

Cloudy day today unfortunately so I've had to play some editing tricks to get these to look even semi-decent. There were tons of Rough Legged Hawks which are only in the lower 48 in the winter and even then can be tough to find (they are never in the southeastern states). They have a very distinct pattern under the wings.

I really wish we had a thread dedicated to birding where we could post pictures, discuss trips, ask questions, etc. I had to go through pages and pages of the scenery thread trying to relocate the picture of black-bellied whistling ducks in flight. We could call it the Outdoor Birding Spot, or similar. Don't know if there's enough interest, but I'll give it a shot. Meet me on that thread within the next day or so. I'll be posting some questions about your trip.

Really nice pictures, BTW, esp. with all the cloud cover.

Some pictures of my favorite jeeping trails near Ouray, CO. You need a 4xdrive with high clearance. For Corkscrew Gulch Rd, you might also need a extra pair of underwear.

Peak of Ophir Pass

Just pass peak of OP

Corkscrew Gulch Rd, which you drive all the way to Silverton. It ain't for cowards. (And don't go with rain in the forecast).

The trail below Corkscrew.

This isn't my photo, it's a guy who lives on Douglas Island like I do, but at the other end. Thought this shot of Juneau at night turned out well. When you fly or boat into town, it's amazing how much wilderness there is and all of a sudden, this little city perched at the bottom of the mountains.

My pix. Juneau, from Douglas.

turned off white balance and got this bad arse shot(IMHO)

Haven't tinkered with them in photoshop but I am pretty impressed at my manual setting skills.
