When I trim my outboard up and down it jumps and makes a knocking noise sometimes. Think I only need to fill the trim fluid or is there something I should also grease?

Should be a couple "zerks" that you can grease, but the hydraulic actuators are usually closed systems. If you need to add fluid, you probably have a leak.

Maybe wear the trim rod is hitting the wear plate?

That’s what I’m thinking. I guess I should of said it’s more of a bounce but it doesn’t do it the whole time when I trim just when it reaches a certain point.

Could be a couple things- make sure rods are clean and no corrosion, seals good, and fittings greased if applicable.

Could also be a little wiggle from when the tilt rod takes over for the trim rams.

Trim it all the way up. Where the rods hit the wear plates put never sieze. It’ll be smooth after.

Sounds like air in the system to me.

If you have a seastar ststem they sell a bleeder kit

Adding trim fluid can hold some issues at bay.

I replaced my Optimax trim motor earlier this year and it wasnt a hard DIY fix

Grease the pivot pins/tube and the cups the trim rams push into. Usually when it’s low fluid the pump makes hella noise and it won’t go up

Just spent half the day dealing with the TT on an E-Tec. Its a 2009 motor and had been trimmed up to max point and wouldn't come down even though trim motor was working fine.

Was told they can get hydro-locked at max height and to loosen the manual release screw and let it down a few inches and retighten the screw, and it should reengage when I ran the motor, which it did.

Even before that though, I was having your same issue. Once I loosened the screw and the motor came down (Set the safety levers in case it wants to come down a lot faster than planned) I realized some of the fluid that was forced out at the manual release point was really thin. I removed the nut for the fill port for the fluid, and managed to get 1/2 of the quart of hydraulic fluid into the reservoir and the rest on my shoes in the process as the fill port is not angled. As instructed by mechanic, I added a little fluid and ran TT up and down a few times, then added more and repeated process a half dozen times until oil was being pushed out fairly easily

It now works like new. No more bumping and burping, and even travels faster. I believe the key in my case was to leave the fill cap off and run motor up and down even after reservoir was full and pushing fluid out, as it purged out some of the older thinner fluid and was replaced with newer fluid.

Wear old shoes.
