Moon Lake, Mississippi

Moon Lake is an oxbow lake along the Mississippi River.
A couple of years ago, some scientists were netting paddlefish, and they caught an unusually large and old big-nosed carp. It was 11 years old and weighed 49.7 kg which is well over 100 pounds. It's ovaries were filled with eggs and weighed about 8 pounds a piece.
I was reading about this in the journal, The Southeastern Naturalist and briefly thought of vacationing in northern Mississippi. I discovered it would be a really cheap vacation...the cost of living out there is even cheaper than my home town of Augusta, Georgia.
The BBQ restaurants are interesting. They serve hot tamales.
However, oxbow lakes and hot tamales are not interesting enough for the rest of my family to make the 8 hour drive.
Anyone on this board ever fish Moon Lake or any of the other oxbow lakes along the Mississippi?

My family is (historically) from St. Joseph, LA and we do reunions on Lake Bruin, which is an oxbow lake.

Moon Lake is a beautiful place. The nearest large (relatively speaking) town is Clarksdale. Clarksdale is not what it once was, but is a decent town by Delta standards - which are low.
That said, living on Moon Lake would be great. It is truly one of the prettiest places no one knows about in the South.
Now: If you are visiting, I would recommend doing so in April, for the Juke Joint Festival, which is very family friendly. You will meet people from all over the world. You will eat well, drink well and hear good music. The crappie fishing on Moon Lake will be great.
There are 5Ks and the like as well that weekend.
Places to eat: Abe's BBQ, Yazoo Pass, Oxbow & Rest Haven.
Morgan Freeman has a blues bar there called Ground Zero. There is Red's Lounge...which is an authentic Juke Joint. There is also Hopson Plantation - which will have live music and is right beside the Shack Up Inn.
If you cannot stay on Moon Lake, stay at Seven Chimneys Farms. You will stay in an old sharecropper home next to the Stovall Mansion (the plantation that Muddy Waters was born on). It is right down HWY 1 south of Moon Lake about 5 miles.

I have several friends with places at Moon Lake. Good duck hunting, never fished there. Have seen some kids out tubing get wiped out by flying carp a couple times. Big ones.

Are you looking at doing just a fishing trip to the Delta?
Quapaw Canoe in Clarksdale does canoe trips on the MS River which would be good for a family trip:

If you like blues music there are several festivals along with historic sites.
You can also stay in a sharecroppers house at Shackup Inn in Clarksdale or Tallahatchie Flats in Greenwood.
A word of caution- if you haven't visited the Detla, you might experience "culture shock."

John Ruskie that runs that deal is amazing. He was featured on the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown last year that toured the Delta.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like the area offers more for a tourist than I thought.
However, I don't think my wife would be too enthused to stay in a sharecropper's cabin.
What is 5ks?

A fun run...3.1 miles or whatever it is - at the Juke Joint Festival. The sharecropper cabins are tricked out. Check out the Seven Chimney's Farms website. LINK
The lady that owns this is a former hedge fund manager, I believe.
I would highly recommend going during the Juke Joint Festival next month. If you go during the summer, it is oppressively hot and the mosquitoes are awful.
Typically, Morgan Freeman is around at his blues club on that weekend. I have hung out with him several times.
Also, Cat Head is probably the foremost blues music and Delta Art store in the United States. It is in downtown Clarksdale.

Those "sharecropper" cabins are really nice looking. They don't look handicapped accessible though. My wife is disabled.
Morgan Freeman's bar sounds like a worthwhile destination.
We may go sometime.
