I’ve got a Kohler CH25 the back of my duck rig, for some damn reason the starter will intermittently just kick on and continuously try to engage while the key is in the off position. This happens whether the engine is red hot or dead cold in the driveway. Currently my only way to kill it is to hit the circuit breaker.

I usually have a solid grasp on these things but this one is escaping me, I’ve cleaned all electrical connections inside and out, made new splices where things looked worn, but for some reason I can’t narrow down the issue. I’m sure it’s a short somewhere that’s making it think I’m giving a start command, but not sure where else to look.

Needless to say this makes for an entertaining/slightly hazardous situation when I’m on the water and it starts to take off on its own, cue the bill dance bloopers.

Anyone have previous experience or thoughts to share?

It could be corrosion inside the started. Shorted out and running the starter.

Some starters are not potted and rebuildable. If yours is perhaps taking it apart and looking at it.

You could have a bad switch as well. See if you can ohm it out with a multimeter.

Carpetbaggers & flooded corn.. can’t stand neither of em!

Thanks judge I hadn’t considered corrosion inside the starter housing itself, will put that on the inspection list.

Could also be the key switch. I’ve replaced mine twice over the years.

had a very similar problem with one and ended up tossing and replacing, my one regret is I did not do it in the first place.

It almost certainly is an internal short if it is not the switch itself.

I’m reading this elsewhere too, we’re talking about the physical component that the key goes in and the wire harness plugs into right?

The signal wire for the starter solenoid is getting voltage from somewhere. It could be in the key switch or in the wiring but that’s 90% where the problem is. Unplug it, put a voltmeter on it and start wiggling stuff around.

10-4, went ahead and ordered the switch replacement this morning, I’ll swap and see if that helps. Can’t stand electrical gremlins.

Switch is where I would start as well.
