I was talking to a USFS silviculturist a little while back. He'd just attended a forestry conference where it was said that if we stopped planting southern yellow pine trees today and only utilized trees in the ground right now, that we'd have enough board feet to supply our needs and forecasted future needs for TWENTY YEARS.
So yeah, mine that I need cut ain't special, but the beetles sure do love it.
That's why we're putting every bit of cutover that we have into pasture and won't plant another pine seedling for the foreseeable future unless it's hilly/swampy terrain where we're exploring other species like the hybrid walnut trees, poplar, etc.
