Got a Public Land Turkey

You baws been mad at the turkeys lately so I thought I’d share my story here (next post). Grew up in LA, hunted there along the MS river on both sides for turkeys and deer. Moved to Minnesota and have had a good year. Shot a nice 8 pt with my bow on a 20 acre piece I got permission for and killed a gobbler on public land 20 minutes from my house.

Hunted public land pretty hard for 4 days. Had two different birds hang up about 75 yards out. I became convinced that the public land birds, if they can see your decoy setup, ain’t coming that final distance. They want you to come to them. So finally got on another gobbler. Got to within 100yds or so with some thick stuff between me and him so he couldn’t see the decoys. Start some soft yelps, pot call purrs, and diaphragm clucks. Get a good response. Two hens show up looking for their friend. Turn my head 90° from the direction of the gobbler, cup and project the same soft yelps sideways. Get a good response. 5 min later same calls but craning my neck around the tree I’m sitting under and project behind me. He gobbled twice in the span of a couple minutes and had clearly cut the distance. I stayed silent, and he showed up about 40yds out in the thick stuff. Took the first shot I got through an opening.
