I use both....and as recently as yesterday in order to pass on a 2.5 year old 8 point.
Saw him first coming out of the woods with my Vortex Viper Binos and then checked through the scope. If I was using scope alone, I would have taken the shot....
When i was able to hold on him longer with the binos I got a better look at his antlers when he picked his head up and looked in my direction....I could clearly see his antlers were not outside of his ears (they were close) and he was a muscular frame with little or no sagging belly. He had longer looking legs...so I aged him off the hoof at 2.5 years old.
We need to break through the glass ceiling of shooting 2.5 year olds and 2 seasons ago, I would have taken this 140 yard shot and either killed or made for a long night chasing a buck that would have been Euro Mounted.
Get the right equipment and make sure whoever hunts with you has it as well.
