You guys are not seeing the bigger picture, so I am going to advertise a bug net for you.

ARE YOU TIRED OF PUTTING ON SOME OINTMENT THAT YOU SWEAT OFF OR BECOMES INEFFECTIVE IN ONLY A FEW MINUTES?

Are you tired of buying can after can of smelly bug spray each time you go outdoors?

Well I'm here today to offer you a better option! A one time solution to all your bug problems. Cover up! Just wear clothing from head to toe. Wait, you don't have clothing that will protect your face?

Never fear! I bring to you the bug net for your head! It protects your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth from insects the size of locusts to no-seeums (gnats).

Here's a picture of yours truly in action doing his amazing job:

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, but Pec, it's Louisiana and if I were to cover up that much in our summers, I will roast in my own clothes and be done by dinner time. Also, having spent many a summer in Louisiana, I can with out a doubt say, Utah has meaner bugs.

Au contrere mon freres (et soeurs)! The picture is from me working in the high desert of Utah in the most intense part of their summer. That puts the heat index at 110 F. But how did I stay alive? It's because I carefully chose what clothes to wear. Each are very thin, breathable fabrics that can release my body heat while keeping the bugs out.

So if you are tired of all those silly liquids and old wives tales to get rid of your pesky bug problem, then try a bug net and wear some clothes from head to toe.

ACT NOW AND I'LL THROW IN AN EMPTY BOTTLE OF SUNBLOCK! BECAUSE YOU WON'T NEED THAT EITHER!

Remember, I'm not only a bug net seller, I'm also a client:

Cactus Juice works on gnats. They'll still fly around you, but won't bite. Just don't put it above your eyes, cause it burns like hell if it gets in them.

Not for me. Nothing does. Not SSS, not Amber Romance, not dryer sheets, not DETE...nothing.

ETA: I should say that these things do work...for about two minutes.

Anybody ever tried a mosquito suit?

So they can still bite you and just get caught in the layer of grease? Just slather on some Vaseline maybe half an inch thick?

This discussion takes place several time a year and the bottom line is there aren't any truly effective products for gnats.

Which is why you gotta cover up with clothes.

That is the only way I have been successful. I don't mind getting bit, but when I those guys crawling in my eyes and ears that's when they get too annoying. So the only effective way I've found is just cover up.

I didn't even look at it

It's just the head though. I'm talking about the full mesh pants and shirt, with a hood. I wouldn't want anything in front of my face when I'm fishing.

I was in Moab this summer where it was a 106 and it doesn't compare to a LA summer.

Humidity is all the difference and you should know that.

I'll where long sleeves and sweats in the evening when the mosquitoes come out but the gnats still find a way in. I don't think there is any fullproof way imo.

I'll give you that, but when you factor in bugs, they are out in Moab during the day and get worse as the day progresses/gets hotter.

In LA they are out in the morning and dusk.

So if you look at it that way then you are getting bugs at the worst time of the day where you have to cover up but it is hot. At least in LA you get a break and can shed some clothes in the heat.

Gnats don't bite in LA like they do in Utah.

I didn't notice them but you have more experience there than I do. I just spent the day at Arches NP so I have no real experience to refer to when it comes to the gnats. I just remember the people I was with bitching about the heat and I just

Oregon is the same way, once it starts to get dark I cover up and spray my head unless it's cool enough for a beanie. I always let the smoke from the fire get on my clothes/hair for added protection too.
