ER doc is the one that should have felt dumb. Family called my office and told me what happened. I sent them to ER so they could expedite the transfer to Children's if needed. I called and talked with ER doc before and then again after he looked at the little girl. He asked what to do and I told him due to location do not remove the spine just cut the catfish off the spine, stabilize the leg and ship her to Childrens. The back of the knee has nearly as much dangerous stuff to damage in a small space as your neck does.

Get a call back 10 min later "well I pulled it out and it started bleeding everywhere. It is shooting blood! I cant find the two ends of the artery to stop it!"

DUMBASSS!!!!!!!

The repair could have been done in the OR by a vascular surgeon non emergently with minimal blood loss and a very minimal scar since the artery would have been kept intact or at least stabilized and not allowed to retract into the tissue. Instead this beautiful girl ended up with a 10" scar on the back of her 24" leg and a vascular graft and months of rehab.

Thankfully one of my partners has the same demeanor I do and physically stopped me from going over to the ER to "speak" with the dumbass ER doc when I heard what he did.

Had a buddy of mine's dad die from complications associated with that stuff...how'd he get it...finned by a hardhead. Not cool.
