Closing on the other side of the deer isn't the reason I don't like them. The reason is because, by design, you get virtually no entry wound. I have killed deer with them and not had a problem, but I have also lost one that was hit solid. I don't know if a different head would have got me that deer, but I know that of all the deer I shot with them, the entry wound was not good. Figured I would fix that problem before it got worse and made a switch to Rages. I have not been disappointed. I had a lot of friends that shot the sptifire when they came out. Most had been Thunder head die hards for years and stuck with NAP. All had similar experiences and none still shoot them. My opinion is stick with fixed blade, but if you must use expandable, shoot one that opens on impact and leaves a good entry hole. THe one you hit in the shoulder and don't get penetration on my be that monster of a lifetime. Would be a shame to lose him because "they always worked before."
