I have a 30” Masterbuilt Electric. It’s been good overall, but it’s too small. Looking at a 40” or bigger, but curious if the propane would be better?

I’d stay with electric but get a bigger one.

It’s easier to control the heat with electric vs propane

Cars run on gas, not smokers.

Propane is full portable if that means anything for you, electric not so much.

I have one of these, I over researched and these were what i came up with at the time. It's great, holds heat, consistent, and no issues with it at all since purchase. Only thing, I wish I had bought a bigger model.

I have had both. But overall like the portability and reliability of the propane. My electric worked great for some years, but when it quit it quit!!! There was no fixing it!

Neither, get you a real man’s smoker and get an offset.

But between those I’d get electric. Better still would be pellet smoker if you’re wanting something that doesn’t have to be watched a whole lot.

Offsets are classic. However, not always ideal for the backyard bbq'er as they require a lot of attention.

I have a larger model masterbuilt propane smoker. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. I opt for wood chunks instead of chips and it has worked well for me. Definitely not portable as it is a bigger model and pretty cumbersome to move around.

If you do any cold smoking, stick with electric. Otherwise, I'd go propane.

I just did an exhaustive amount of research as my wife wanted to get me one for Christmas and I ultimately went with the Camp Chef Smoker 24" ?Smoke Vault.

It is supposedly one of the few propane smokers that can consistently maintain temps on the lower end of the spectrum.

Saskwatch, I just got a Masterbuilt propane for Christmas. Tried to smoke some jerky sticks this weekend and could not get a good smoke at low temp (156-200). Have you encountered this? If so any suggestions?

I know a couple people whose electric got a short and it caught on fire. I'm a purist but if i were going non-purist i would go with a propane cabinet smoker.

Good offset smokers really don't require much fire maintenance you just gotta learn to how to put the wood in the box properly and it will stay warm.

Changing myself. Have a electric smoker if you never plan to move it. Get a propane/pellet smoker if you plan to move it to other places.

Just don't get a Traeger unless you want to pay $$$$

I can't say that I've attempted to smoke anything that low. The lowest temp. I've cooked with it is 225. You can try to decrease propane flow from tank and keep temp. knob on smoker at lowest setting. Maybe try ice-cubes in the water pan?

I use this

and plan on doing the mailbox mod to mine. I really like it, I smoked a boston butt over the weekend. I only had to refill the tray once on a 18 hour smoke. I've cold smoked salmon with it and it came out great.
