I've got a few pecan trees in my yard, and I was thinking about taking a few bags of them and putting them out with my corn. Good or bad idea?

I've never seen them eat one, but I don't see it being any different then acorns.

They WILL eat them. Not sure they will eat them if they have something else, but they'll eat them for sure.

just seems like it would be tough for a deer to crack the shell...

seems like a good protein source though, interested in this because ive got pecan trees all over the place and hundreds of lbs of pecans on the ground

That's what I was thinking as well. I was gonna crack some of them to get that fresh pecan scent out. Maybe the smell of something sweet, and something other than corn and rice bran, would do the trick.

See, the fact that there aren't any pecan trees on our lease is a concern of mine as well. I guess I could always try it out and see. I'll repost if I see good results.

Do you have magic piles of corn that grow on your land? Deer are stupid animals and if it's food they'll eat it. They eat corn and all these other things we put out that do not grow naturally our(your) land.

I have seen them eat the papershell pecans and the new growth on the trees.

I have seen hogs wear out the pecan trees.

If you bring enough of them out there, you will have pecans on the property soon enough. the squirrels will bury a bunch of them and some will grow.

as a matter of fact, talked with an LDWF biologist today. and they do eat pecans, as he planted some trees on his place.
