The shop by LSU just grabbed one off the shelf and adjusted it for me. The guy said that Specialized bikes do their measurements by S M L XL. The guy was real hesitant to tell me what size I test rode but he finally said that it was a medium. I have no idea what size that equates to on other brands but I was not impressed with them.

That's true you prob are a med & most mtb & more upright styles are sized like that. Road bikes which some companies just put a diff bar & fork on them sizes 48 50 52 54 etc.. In cm if it feels good ride & ask for a demo take that thing out for a long ride.
Next topic cycling shorts!!!

I took the Specialized bike out for a short ride today. I am going tomorrow to try and find a Trek FX 7.2 or 7.3. The price difference is small and I hope that one will clearly stand out to me.

Bike shorts....

Old baseball sliding shorts and short athletic shorts will do fine for the time being. I think.

Sounds like you're well on your way....and, no matter what anyone says, get some cycling shorts. Everything else will pinch, bind, crimp and chafe.....

Going to buy some tomorrow!
Do you know what size a Medium Specialized equates to in Trek?

No, sorry. I would guess about a 20 to 21.5 inch frameset. Depending on where they measure, usually from mid-bottom bracket to mid-top tube. If a Medium felt good, go with it.

Infidel, thanks for the heads up. I have some friends that ride trails but I could no way keep up with them. I want to get a road bike to get back in shape and get better at riding. Once I can hang with my friends, I will spend the money on a decent trail bike. I just dont want to get a bike thats too heavy or not what I really need, an exercise bike.

I have a buddy that got me riding recently. He has a very expensive bike and is in really good shape. I can't come close to keeping up, but it doesn't really matter.
