The second theory was the most acceptable.
Ain’t no way that Sitka killed one and kept thrashing till his head ripped off.
He found a dead head, and locked horns with it.

You betcha. One of my clients timber cruiser came across two giant bucks in Wilcox County Alabama that were locked up and died. They had them mounted in a corner mount in their office, it was beautiful two giant head mounts locked together for eternity. I believe the taxidermist had to saw the horns apart and then reattach after he added the capes which he took from other deer. He did a great job on the mount.
