Schwartz,
Do you carry concealed now or will this be your first cc gun?
Personally, I don't like double stack magazine guns for cc. My first cc gun was supposed to be a Springfield XD w/ 4" barrel in 40 S&W. It didn't take long for me to find out I really like single stack magazine guns a lot better for cc, compared to double stack. Now I never cc the XD. During warm weather I frequently pocket carry a Kel-Tec PF9. The rest of the time I carry inside the waistband either a 3.5" or 4.25" 1911 in 45 ACP. I just bought another single stack cc gun, a Kahr CW45 in 45 ACP. I hope I like it as well, or better, than my 1911's.
If you stay w/ the XD for cc, I'd get the 3.8" barrel. I'm not as excited as some about the previously referenced micro XD single stack XD. Compared to other XD's, it gives up a lot of rounds and is heavier.

This was the other thing I was looking at, but I kinda got overwhelmed and decided on the XD(M) after being unable to decide on a 1911. I handled a Colt Defender that I really liked, but that's about it. Any suggestions?

Schwartz,
I'm no expert on 1911's but I do own two. Did a lot of research before buying them. I was never a big fan of the 1911 until I first handled one. It fit my hand so much better than did other handguns. Plus, it carries so much easier because it so much thinner. It's a little heavier than some other guns, but that's not a big thing w/ right belt/holster.
I bought my first 1911 2 years ago and bought a second one 6 months later.
There are at least 3-4 different price ranges w/ 1911's. I have 2 from the lower end. I got my two, a 4 1/4" Commander model by American Classic and a 3 1/2" Concealed Carry Model by Citadel, for easily less than $500 out the door. I ordered them from www.galleryofguns.com. I've seen some RIA's or Citadel's at some of the Academy's.In this same price range I'd include Rock Island Armory, Citadel, Firestorm, American Classic and ATI. The next price range up would be the $600-800 range and would include Remington, Ruger, Taurus and some models by Kimber, STI, Colt and Springfield. Things start getting really expensive beyond that.
For my first 1911, I didn't want to spend a whole lot since I wasn't sure I'd like the 1911 enough to justify a more expensive one. There are two large manufacturers in the Philippines making a number of quality, entry level 1911's (Armscor makes Rock Island Armory and Citadel while Metero Arms makes American Classic, ATI and Firestorm). These guns are well-repected on the 1911 forums on the 'net. My Commander and Citadel both came w/ a number of upgrades, including Novak style sights, beavertail safety, extended slide release/safety and combat trigger/hammer. 500 rounds later I'm still very pleased. The Citadel's done well now at 300+ rounds. To carry the 1911 you'll have to accept the fact that, compared to some other guns, it's manuel of arms is more difficult and it's more prone to being "tempermental".
There are a lot of very nice higher priced 1911's out there , but there are now some good options if one doesn't want to spend very much.
You'll find a ton of good 1911 info at these two sites:
