A co-worker advised me of the exact opposite. He told me I could test drive both of his and if I liked it he would sell both really cheap.

Said something about having to replace parts on the ejection system every time he shoots it. Could it be that he's using dirty ammo?

What downshift says is true for older 1100s that were made w/ machined parts compared to the pressed parts that rem started using (90s I think). My uncle has a 3’ 1100 from the 80s a great gun but a fixed choke barrel.
I know some guys that shoot versamax and they like them both hunting and skeet/clays. Again 1187 nope nope nope

So the 80's models and earlier are the way to go?

yes but generally they have fixed choke barrels so they are not an all purpose gun. You can get a gunsmith to add choke tubes. Other alternative would be a used berretta 390/391 they have choke tubes and are great guns. 391s can also shoot 3.5" (not all models). I don't shoot 3.5s my advice is go to skeet range learn how to shoot and 3" will kill everything you need. Your shoulder will thank me in the future. Its generally the indian not the arrow if you miss ;)

Does he need to shoot 3 1/2's? What is his budget?

My brother is looking to buy a semiautomatic shotgun, but he doesn't want to break the bank . He wants something that won't jam up also .

He wants a lot of things, doesn't he?

Seriously, Mossberg 930 in whatever configuration you want is the likely answer here.

But, semis will "jam up" - and I mean every one of them will do so under the right/wrong conditions - you just have to find what it likes and what it doesn't like.
