Yall just missed the Virginia Highlands Festival there in Abingdon. Lots of great music, arts, crafts, etc. Abingdon is an "old money" town, too. Check out the Barter Theatre while yall are in town? Martha Washington Inn is nice and interesting. You and mama can book a horsedrawn carriage ride there at the MWI and have a relaxing evening. Weather is gonna be great this week, too! Hope yall brought a sweater? It was 53F here this morning.

the hotel/motel part

I have the fortune to spend more for my three night stay at the Holiday Inn in Bristol than I did for my six nights at the Westin in Maui on my honeymoon.

What about how early we should arrive at the track for Friday and Saturday? Would traffic be bad on Thursday night if there's no event?

Traffic will be worse than usual due to the folks that are already there for the race going out to eat, shopping, groceries, etc. Incoming traffic to Bristol won't really get bad until Saturday morning. After the race is over is when traffic is the worst.

Yep, in addition to jacking gas prices, the hotels and motels will rip you off, too. That's why a lot of folks try to rent and do rent some local residents' homes for the weekend. More room and cheaper. We locals don't even go to or around the Bristol area during race week unless we are going to the race. I've been there lots of times, but the best seat to see the race now is in my living room.

leave in the morning, a group of 5 of us have been going to the fall race and camping from Wed - Sun for about 5 years. The core group has been doing it for over 15 years.

It's a great time. Nothing but drinking, playing corn hole, and seeing the races at night. Look forward to it every year.
