Keep an eye out for the old Curado 100 series, either B or D models. Great smaller framed reels for kids, all of my kids learned on them. Still have a couple my grandkids will be learning on very soon.

I started my son when he was 8y/o also. Taught him to flip/pitch first so the wasp nest weren't bad. It allowed him get the feel for the baitcaster first before he started zinging baits 50+ ft.
As for the reel, I'd get him the H20 Xpress Mettle size 70 from Academy. It's smaller than the original and would fit his hand better. At $70 its easily the best bang for your $.
