I've been fishing in the marsh north of Grand Isle several times but was recently thinking it would be cool to go on a long paddle east into those other barrier islands and maybe even camp on the beach and come back the next day. Google Earth seems to show just some oilfield locations but seems like it would be doable. Anyone ever tried that or at least been around there in a boat?

Yes I have. I've run over to grand terre, but no further than that. If you do go with a partner. I've been on calm days so not bad at all.

Definitely go with a partner. Things can get pretty sketchy in that pass when weather gets bad (even just a pop up storm) so don't cross unless it's clear and calm

Please make sure that it is gonna be dead calm to cross barataria pass on the way there and way back. The amount of current that passes thru there when there is a tide will probably mean death if you capsize for any reason while crossing it. And with the groundswell, recreational boats, commercial boats, and work boats that pass thru there it can happen at anytime. Now launching off beach at state park would probably be safer than launching on bayside of island, but regardless please be careful if you attempt it. It is nothing like Crossing Camanada pass!

I've fished grand terre a good bit by boat. Only gone once in the yak, Passing through Barataria was difficult because the tide (and wind) was going against me but it wasn't very rough. If you head down far enough you'll find a slit in the jetties that leads to one of my favorite spots. There's a long canal that leads to a huge shallow lake. I've had most of my success in that canal in a deep area (5-6 feet) during the winter months, loaded with reds, sheepshead and sand trout. The spot is mostly inaccessible by boat at low tide but at high tide it is possible to get your boat into that canal. If you actually find the spot on Google earth you can see my grandfathers 1976 Boston Whaler anchored right near the slit of the jetties as we headed out there a few days before thanksgiving. If you do head out east past Barataria I HIGHLY recommend this spot in the winter months. Hope this could help
