I don't need another tall gun safe, but I would like to get something to hold my ammo. I would like to set it on top of my gun safe and it needs to be fireproof some.

Any suggestions out there?

Man I’ve like several hundred pounds of ammo so I couldn’t want to overhead press it off my safe

I never really felt the need to keep ammo in a fire proof safe. I did keep pistol and 22 ammo on a shelf in my safe but my shotgun ammo and about rifle ammo was in my ammo closet in my hidden gun room.

I can’t help with something to go on top of your safe, but I ended up going with an ammo cabinet from Cabela’s. Not sure if they still make them. I originally wanted something fireproof as well, but ended up just getting the cabinet. It will prevent rounds from going anywhere in the event of a fire.

Tractor Supply and Sportsman's Warehouse both have ammo lockers. That's all you really need for ammo imho.

I keep mine stashed away in ammo cans stacked in a spare walk in closet.

So, I saw this video where they opened some safes that were in house fires .... good safes, expensive safes, full of ammo.

The ammo didn't survive. It cooked off in every safe.

I figure, why put it in there with my expensive firearms?

I dunno, that's just me.

Another quick personal experience.

If you're on a slab it's no big deal, but if you're on a conventional foundation with a crawl space ... we actually started getting some sag in our floor in that spare bedroom and I had to have that closet floor jacked up and braced. That was just the ammo, that's not where either of the safes are located. So keep that in mind .... ammo is heavy. When you start talking about 20k - 30k of ammo (and that's not a lot in my circles) you're talking 100s of pds of weight per sq inch if you stack it high enough.

An 81mm mortar cannister holds 1200 rounds of 22LR.

Am 81mm mortar can, built to hold three rounds, holds 5000 rounds of 147 gr 9mm ... which I used to reload and shoot in competition. That one can was too heavy for me to pick up by those skinny handles and move around by myself. I forget, we weighed one, one time, and I think it was 110 pds.

Do ten of those ... it's a half a ton. You stack those 5x2 and your floor is gonna suffer. It's nothing to put a quarter ton of ammo in an ammo locker.

Just something to think about.

Thanks for the info. I took my ammo out of the ammo cans to put in the safe, but I can switch them. I also found this which may work. I am also trying to make room in my good gun safe for important paper to go into.

I've got one of those I keep on top of a file cabinet ... I keep some moderately valuable papers in it. I used to keep employees' folders/jackets in it at the office back in my business/working days.

Not a safe but does lock, I use a Husky tool cabinet. I put it on top my safe.
