I second having someone come out and take a look at it before you do anything. I've read about aeration in an old pond causing fish kills at start up. A pro will know how to test for and avoid the issue, which is a build up of H2S in the mud on the bottom suddenly being stirred up and entering the water column.

As others have said dont waste time on a fountain. You need diffusers on the bottom powered by a compressor. Can buy for around $1k, I built mine using a septic aerator pump and some diffusers from amazon. Built a pvc frame for them and then purchased some weighted hose to pipe together. Prob got $300 in the whole thing.

Also why I told him to be careful on pond boss, those guys hear 30 year old pond with bullheads in it their first response is gonna involve rotenone, heavy equipment, a small nation's annual consumption of ag lime, a live buffalo, and the kids college fund.
