Second pipe in Deepwater Horizon riser
Any guesses as to what it is?
Like I said the first time this subject came up, if they really wanted to know all the have to do is pull up the section of riser between the two cuts they made to get the first cap on.

This has been a mystery ever since they cut the kink off and saw two pieces of drill pipe looking back at them. The only thing I can guess is that the pipe broke as the rig was sinking and the upper section fell down as far as the partially closed rams. So it was sitting there alongside the other section of drill pipe inside the riser.
Also, I thought that they finally had raised the section of riser they cut off up to the surface. No?

Correct - currently being tested to determine where the second joint came from via serial nos. used when running in hole.

Thank you.
The fact that they need to resort to serial numbers is telling. If they looked at the other end of the riser and it had 6-5/8" drill pipe in it, then they'd know immediately that it came from above.
